Dairy Farming – Legacy Farm, Kitale – Part 1
Legacy Farm in Kitale is a large farm owned by Madam Mary. She is a woman who is not only hardworking but passionate about farming. Although her main focus is dairy farming, she practices mixed farming on her extensive land.
She was kind enough to let us visit her farm, on the dairy farming side of it and we got to have a feel of what her day in the farm is like.
The cowshed is cleaned every morning. The cow dung is collected and taken to the biodigester which then produces gas that she uses at home for cooking. The other waste from the biodigester goes to the farm as manure.
The calves are kept separate from the cows in a different shed.
Mary plants her own grass which is cut and mixed with store bought feeds to maximize on nutrition.
The cows are milked three times a day. After separating the milk needed for the calves, the rest is sold.
Mary’s clients include a local school in the area, neighbours and the locals in the area.
